ORR engineering student initiates 3D printer fundraiser

Old Rochester Regional junior Drew Robert wants to introduce students in the school’s engineering courses to new dimensions of learning. Robert, along with his teacher, Tom Norris, are spearheading a fundraiser to purchase a 3D printer for the school.

“Mr. Norris and I have been looking into different ways to enhance the technology and engineering department at the school. We decided on a 3D printer because, in my opinion, the engineering classes are severely lacking modern and advanced technologies that would lead to enhanced hands-on learning,” said Robert, a Mattapoisett resident.

Robert and Norris have posted their project on www.donorschoose.org, a website that gives teachers a platform to receive donations for school projects and activities.

Robert took the lead on the project, researching and writing the details of the proposal and explaining why the printer would be a helpful tool to ORR students.

“Drew investigated various printer models, costs, applications and brainstormed ideas as to how the printer would fit into the technology program. When he mentioned that 3D printers are used to make synthetic prosthetics, prototype models and print living cells, I was sold,” said Norris. “Drew is an exemplary student. His dedication and passion for engineering will someday serve him well.”

After researching several different printers, Robert selected the Makerbot Mini Replicator, which costs $1,241. Norris says it is a good and affordable introductory model.

“Mr. Norris and I were talking about the capabilities of a 3D Printer for a while, and we often said how awesome it would be to get the students interested in the modern engineering world. It was kind of a spitball type idea in that it came up sort of suddenly,” Robert said.

Now, with the grant up on the Donors Choose website, Norris and Robert hope that others will see the value of the printer and donate funds to make it a reality. For more information, visit the project donation page here.
