ORR field hockey, a 'well-rounded team'

After losing much of their team last year, the young women of Old Rochester Regional’s field hockey team weren’t sure what to expect.

“We were a little bit nervous going into it,” said Jane Kassabian.

Along with fellow senior captains Morgan Middleton and Maggie Wiggin, Kassabian said the team got off to a rough start, and their coach, Polly Lawrence admitted it took some time to figure out which girl to put in when.

The team headed into the first round of playoffs against Medway with nine wins. Although they were defeated 2-0, the overall season record shows the team and Lawrence were fighters.

One of the team’s strengths, said the captains, is that all of the team members have a role to play.

“We’re a well-rounded team,” said Kassabian. “It helps that no one stands out.”

The team has 12 scorers who have spread out the points instead of the usual one or two.

“We like to share the wealth,” said Lawrence. “They’re not a ‘go for the glory’ team.”

She added, “It doesn’t matter whether they start or they don’t start…they all have something to offer.”

The girls showed improvement over the season, often besting the opponents who had beat them during their first match ups.

Even in the losses, Lawrence said, “They know how to lose with dignity.”

And they get on the practice field and work to correct weaknesses, she said.

Above all, said Lawrence, the girls have fun with the game and have a close bond.

“What a team they are,” she said.
