ORR freshman publishes first science fiction book
At 14, Hannah Powers’ literary aspirations are already well ahead of many would-be novelists. A freshman at Old Rochester Regional High School, the Mattapoisett girl published her first book this summer, and she’s considering a sequel.
Powers, the daughter of Jeff and Raquel Powers, published her book “Night & Day” through Amazon’s independent publishing service.
As an eighth grade student, she and a number of other junior high students participated in NaNoWriMo, short for National Novel Writing Month, an initiative that encourages people across the world to write a novel during the month of November.
Before participating in NaNoWriMo, Powers said she had enjoyed creative writing assignments in elementary school, and even as a small child dreamed of writing a book one day.
“I was five years old sitting in the stands at my brother’s basketball game, and I would write out a little story with a horse at a rodeo,” she said. Powers remembers thinking, “'I hope one day I’ll be a published author,' and this is a dream come true.”
Powers read a book about people living on the “dark side” a long time ago, and it sparked the idea for “Night & Day” – a work of science fiction set on earth about 100 years from now and complete with hover crafts.
A meteor has hit the blue planet, stopping its rotation and putting half the world in perpetual darkness while the other half has endless light. Nick, a smart teenager and the novel’s narrator, lives in the light until circumstances force him into the unknown darkness.
Powers said she was able to complete Nick’s story by the close of November, but on the advice of NaNoWriMo, gave herself a few months to rest before editing the book.
After making some changes, she decided to publish the book so she could give a few friends copies, never planning to tell many people.
Then Principal Mike Devoll caught wind (from Power’s mom) that one of his new students had a book available on Amazon. After Devoll announced it on the school’s website and Facebook page, Powers said several people approached her about the book, and she’s received positive feedback from friends.
“It’s so exciting. I never thought I’d actually reach this point,” said the young author. “I would love to do writing as a career. I’m getting a head start.”
Powers hopes to participate in NaNoWriMo again this year, though she will have to squeeze it in between Drama Club, the cross country team and her school work. She’s also started writing a follow-up to “Night & Day” as well as another story.
Sounds like we should all get her autograph now. Paperback and e-book versions of “Night & Day” are available at amazon.com.
