ORR girls cross country captures first division title

The Old Rochester girls cross country program has achieved a lot through the years, including undefeated regular seasons and South Coast Conference titles.

On Nov. 14, the team entered new territory by earning its first ever Division 5 Eastern Massachusetts championship.

The win comes one year after the girls earned second place in the division.

“We knew that winning the championship was the goal this year after coming so close in 2014,” said Head Coach Cindy Tilden. “We were more worried about placement than individual times.”

The day of the race featured terrible weather conditions. Runners faced 20 mile-per-hour winds and temperatures that dipped to 35 degrees.

Tilden said the runners were well-matched against Hamilton-Wenham, the second runner up.

“I had been watching them and each of our runners had an equivalent to race against. Each of the girls had one of [Hamilton-Wenham] runners to race against,” Tilden said. “It was pretty even the whole race.”

Four ORR runners placed in the top 14 spots to secure the win. The Hamilton-Wenham team had captured six of the last seven Division 5 championships.

Bulldog senior Maddie Meyer finished sixth overall with a time of 19:47.

Tilden said this was Meyer’s second year on the team.

Last year, she was ill for the race and still managed to place a time in the 20-minute range.

A healthy Meyer’s contributed to the win. “She’s an aggressive runner who works real hard and just goes for it,” Tilden said.

Senior Nina Bourgeois finished ninth overall, followed by sophomore Madisen Martin in tenth place. Placing 14th and 25th overall were sophomore Madeline Scheub and junior Avery Nugent, respectively.

The Bulldogs are headed to the All-State meet on Saturday at Stanley Park in Westfield. The team is ranked seventh going into that meet.

“We’re hoping to do well,” Tilden said.
