ORR graduates 'officially evicted'

With a game show, comparisons to “Toy Story,” and praise for their achievements, the 51st class of Old Rochester Regional High School graduated on Saturday afternoon.

While the rain kept the football field too soggy for an outdoor ceremony, the school’s gym filled up with family and friends who cheered on 2013 graduates as they ended a memorable chapter in their lives.

Taking a cue from the “Toy Story” movies, valedictorian Teddy Costa told his peers, “Today is your last day in the toy box, so to speak.”

While he acknowledged that the school and the towns had been safe places for the class, Costa also said difficult things would be ahead for his fellow classmates as they were “officially evicted” from ORR.

“Our place in this world won’t be handed to us,” said Costa. But he said, “I know this class will not succumb to fear. We are bright, talented, successful individuals with the right friendships, connections, and aspirations to find out place in this world.”

ORR Superintendent Doug White also spoke.  “I’ve been extremely surprised by your level of accomplishment,” he said.

White encouraged the class to be innovators as they move from high school students to young adults.

“You must challenge yourself to be a learner, not just a knower,” said White. “You need to be able to adapt.”

For his speech, Principal Mike Devoll took a trip down memory lane with his students through the “Know Your Class” game show in which he highlighted the academic, athletic, and artistic achievements of the class.

Among the 159 graduates were students who stood out by winning SCC championships, by excelling in music and drama, by taking nine AP classes, and by bringing a pig to school.

“You have been a great class, well representative of the excellence we have come to expect from our school,” said Devoll. “Thank you to the class of 2013 for giving us so much to be proud of.”
