ORR to hold fundraiser for former student

Old Rochester Regional High School teacher Mike Jenkins wants to put March Madness to a good use with a basketball bracket that will help raise money for an alumnus in need.

Brandon Correia, who graduated from ORR in 2009, is currently in need of a liver transplant. There are already several fundraisers for the former ORR hockey player, and Principal Mike Devoll said Jenkins would like to add more support from the school.

“One hundred percent of the proceeds would go to charity,” said Devoll. “There will be no payout to a student.”

The fundraiser will ask students to pay $5 to enter the “bracket challenge” and the winner will get bragging rights.

The ORR School Committee discussed the fundraiser on Wednesday night.

“I don’t think it’s promoting gambling,” said Chair Joseph Scott. “We need to move forward in a way that we don’t have any inference of it being betting.”

Devoll said the money can be kept in the school safe and will be handed over to the parent in charge of raising funds for Correia.
