ORR officials seek solution to traffic congestion

It should be easier to get into and past Old Rochester Regional campus in light of a new traffic pattern being piloted to reduce congestion on Route 6.

The combination of buses and parents dropping students off at the front entrances of the junior high and high schools has created a traffic headache.

“Cars were backing up all the way to Aucoot Road, and they were in competition with the buses,” said ORR High School Vice Principal Mike Parker.

Parker said the traffic issue has increased this year, possibly due to larger class sizes and more parents driving their students to school. The school counted 140 drop offs at the high school and 80 at the junior high in one morning.

The police, superintendent, and school administrators decided to move drop offs for the high school to the side entrance, diverting some traffic to the eastern driveway.

The first day of the new traffic pattern,  Wednesday, Sept. 4 was a success. “We only did it for one day but it was much better,” said Parker.
