ORR senior prepares for national indoor track competition

Danny Renwick is going to Nationals for indoor track in March. Not bad for someone who only joined the team last year.

Renwick, the son of Charlyn Feeney and Douglas Renwick and a senior at Old Rochester Regional High School, played on the school’s hockey and baseball teams before making the switch to winter and spring track where Athletic Director Bill Tilden said he quickly proved his ability to hurdle over any challenge.

“There are some good high jumpers in the state, but Danny is probably the best all around athlete that we’ve had,” said Tilden.

Although Renwick, a Marion resident, played hockey and baseball from childhood, he also had experience on the ORR Junior High track team, where he was skilled at the high jump.

While most of his fellow jumpers reached 4-8 mark, Renwick hit 5-6.

Practicing for the Junior Olympics the summer before his junior year, Renwick found he’d only gained height, jumping 6-1. With a challenging academic year ahead of him, he decided to forego late night hockey practices for track.

The move paid off. In January, Renwick qualified for the pentathlon at Nationals, to be held in March.

“It was a goal I wanted to achieve by the end of the season,” Renwick said.

Now he’s working to improve his skills in the high jump, long jump, hurdles, shot put and 1,000-meter race before March.

He is exceeding his personal bests already. Renwick recently reached 6-7 in the high jump, his top height.

“Now that’s my new goal: 6-9,” he said.

While focused on Nationals, Renwick is still excelling in a challenging academic schedule.

He is taking five Advanced Placement courses, is second in his class and recently received the Superintendent’s Certificate of Academic Excellence, but Renwick said daily practices help him stay on track.

“In a way, track almost helps me with my time management,” he said.

Academics and track will still be a focus for the soon-to-be graduate when he matriculates to Williams College in the fall where he plans to study math.
