National Girls and Women in Sports Day was celebrated at Faneuil Hall on Feb. 7 where two Old Rochester Regional High School athletes were honored.

Juniors Nicole Gifford and Ashley Pacheco were selected to represent ORR. Gifford is a three-season athlete known for soccer, indoor and outdoor track.  She said she was, “happy to find out [Athletic Director Bill Tilden] had nominated us. It’s an honor.”

Athletic directors from high schools throughout Massachusetts chose two female athletes that excel on the field with talent, leadership, commitment and serve as role models for teammates.

Pacheco, a three-sport participant who stands out in field hockey, basketball and outdoor track, also felt honored to represent ORR because, “It’s a great place and we have a lot of girls who deserved the award.”

Attorney General Martha Coakley served as a guest speaker for the event, which the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association sponsored. In keeping with the association’s mottos of “Developing the Leaders of Tomorrow” and “Passing the Torch,” Mary Pratt, a former baseball player in the All-American league, posed for pictures with the honorees.
