ORR swims all the way to the bank

Everything is going swimmingly for Old Rochester Regional High School’s newest sport.

Backed by a group of parents, the ORR School Committee approved a co-ed swim team in June under the condition that they raise $7,500 by October 1.

After a summer of fundraisers, the Friends of Old Rochester Swimming handed the money to the school earlier this week.

But, Friends President Kristin Johnson said, “We still have to raise more. We’re not done. The pool time is going to be expensive, and we still need support from the community and businesses.”

For now, raising funds is mostly on hold as the school enters the fall sports season.

In the meantime, the school will begin looking for a coach as well as renting pool time for the winter season, which starts the Monday after Thanksgiving and lasts eight weeks.

While that date is still a few months away, Johnson said they already have a large number of kids ready to join.

Many of the them are already frequent swimmers.

“A lot of these kids swim either for the YMCA team or a U.S. swimming club team,” said Johnson.

At a recent sports night at ORR, 20 new kids signed up for the varsity team, in addition to the 15 or so kids that previously expressed interest.

The final number is still uncertain, but Johnson said, “There are a large number of swimmers in the 9th grade. It will be a younger team.”

That doesn’t bother Johnson, whose own daughter is still two years away from being able to join the team.

“A lot of other parents have kids in the sixth grade or junior high,” she said. “A lot of the parents were swimmers. We all feel passionate about it and want to help.”
