ORR's hockey 'prophet' Max Sherman goes to All-Star Classic
Old Rochester Regional High School senior Max Sherman is an ice hockey prophet, or so his coaches say.
“He has an uncanny ability to anticipate what’s going to happen before it happens,” said assistant hockey coach Mike Jenkins. “That’s what separates him from most other players in the area.”
But head coach Scott Harley said the humble high school senior will tell you he’s no good on the ice.
Lucky for Sherman, other coaches around the state disagree.
Sherman was one of 46 students chosen to play in the Massachusetts State Hockey Coaches Association High School All-Star Classic Sunday, April 1.
Now in its third year, the game features the state’s best hockey players who face off in a North versus South game at the DCU Worcester Center.
“That puts him in the top echelon of high school hockey players,” said Jenkins.
Sherman said he and his parents were shocked when they heard the good news.
“It means I’ve been noticed. People see what you’re doing,” said Sherman. “It’s nice to be rewarded.”
Sherman has skated almost as long as could walk.
“My dad got me on skates when I was three years old,” he said. “I’ve pretty much played since.”
Sherman, a team captain for two years, practices at least once a week in the off-season and is comfortable playing any position.
“It’s fast moving. It’s a team game, and you can’t do it all yourself,” said Sherman. “I play hard always.”
A text messaging campaign got Sherman in the starting lineup for the All-State Classic where he played defense for the South team.
Although his team lost 4-2, Sherman hopes to continue playing hockey in college next year.
