ORR's new softball coach brings two decades of experience
Don DiBiasio has a wealth of experience when it comes to whipping girls into shape on the softball field.
The new addition to Old Rochester Regional athletics started coaching when his daughters, now 30 and 31, played softball in Swansea.
“I grew to love the sport. It’s a challenging sport. It take a lot of work to learn how to catch, how to throw, how to bat,” said the Somerset resident and long-time police officer.
DiBiasio has run the Swansea Girls Softball League for 23 years and oversees the softball programs for 80 towns and cities in the Commonwealth.
“It’s a great sport,” he said. “The kids are phenomenal to watch, play and to coach.”
DiBiasio previously worked at Case High School, where he coached girls he had worked with since they were five years old.
ORR is “huge difference” for DiBiasio, who is stepping into the spot held by Mike Roderick. Since he doesn’t know the tri-town girls, it actually gives him more opportunity to coach.
“It’s a teaching atmosphere with these girls,” he said. “They’re so respectful. They want to play, they want to learn, they want to win. They’re a great, great bunch.”
Defense is a top priority for the team and learning how to move runners along the bases instead of looking for home runs.
“Getting their mindsets to think that way is what we’ve been working on a lot,” said the coach.
As the season continues, DiBiasio has plenty of work to do, but he’s upbeat about the team.
“These are the kinds of kids that want you to coach them.”
