Outdoor fires currently banned in Tri-Town
Outdoor fires are currently banned in the Tri-Town due to a high risk of brush or wildland fires.
Marion, Mattapoisett and Rochester have all issued warnings about the current risk.
The entire state of Massachusetts is currently under a red flag warning according to the National Weather Service.
A red flag warning means that conditions ideal for fires are either happening now or approaching.
The Rochester Fire Department said in a Facebook post that firefighters responded to six calls this past weekend regarding outside burning.
“Although the weather is very seasonable for outdoor activity, campfires, outside burning and cookfires are not permitted due to the extremely high potential for brush fires,” the post read.
In Marion, the fire ban has been extended through at least Friday, Nov. 15.
“Historically low rainfall, bright and breezy weather, and bone-dry fuel sources mean that any outdoor fire will quickly grow out of control,” said Marion Fire Chief Brian Jackvony. “Every firefighter battling a preventable wildfire is one who can’t respond to a house fire, car crash, or medical emergency. Please use caution and common sense and refrain from any outdoor activity that could spark a fire.”
According to the town of Marion, fires in October rose 1,200% above the state average.
An announcement on Mattapoisett’s town website signed by Fire Chief Andrew Murray states that significant rainfall is not in the forecast of the near future, adding to potential danger of uncontrolled fires.
Outdoor fires are currently banned in Mattapoisett until further notice.
“In the last week, well over 500 acres have burned in Massachusetts, raising concerns for wildland and brush fires across the region,” the announcement read.
