Pilgrim Sands Trail Riders donate hundreds of toys to Mattapoisett churches' holiday drive
Mattapoisett churches don't want to see any kid go without at least one new toy this Christmas, and the Pilgrim Sands Trail Riders have donated lots of gifts to help make that a reality.
"Every house should smell good and every child should have a new toy," said Jodi Bauer, an organizer of the dirt bike racing group.
The trail riders collected hundreds of toys through their recent races in Mattapoisett and Freetown, splitting the gifts equally between the two towns.
On Saturday, Bauer and her son Freemin unloaded a van full of dolls, stuffed animals and games that will go to St. Anthony's Catholic Church. The church is gift central for the town's toy drive. St. Anthony's, the Mattapoisett Congregational Church and the Mattapoisett Meeting House collaborate on the toy drive, getting help from the schools and other town institutions to know which families need toys.
Parents in need can choose the unwrapped gifts for their children and wrap them for Christmas.
This holiday season is the second one the trail riders have donated gifts.
Bauer said, "[They're] so appreciative of Mattapoisett for letting them have the short course race."
The bikers have two races a year at the town's Transfer Station.
"This just warms my heart. Not one child is going to go without a toy," said Bauer.
