Planning Board approves trash pickup permit request for Bay Club
On Monday night, the Bay Club became the third private development to get approval for trash pickup.
Many developments in town have special permits that require them to pay for their own trash collection. The current contract with ABC Disposal, however, allows for pickup at all residences under a single fee.
As such, two other private housing developments have gone before the Planning Board to request a change in their original permits. Both Brandt Point and the Village at Mattapoisett were granted a conditional change to their permits, allowing them to receive pickup under the town’s current contract with ABC. A change in that contract would cause the permits to revert to their original terms.
Dave Andrews, a representative for the Bay Club said seeing these developments get approval prompted the community to request the change as well. Currently, the development pays for pickup from Waste Management.
Before the Planning Board made its decision, resident Paul Osenkowski voiced his concern with the request as he has in past meetings.
“I believe this is going to create a slippery slope and I am right. It has been a slippery slope,” he said. “I feel that this is an improper direction to go for the Planning Board. I’m still vehemently opposed to it.”
Planning Board member Mary Crain questioned if pickup at additional addresses would cost the town more because of added tonnage. While trash pickup is a flat rate, the town does pay a per ton of trash taken to SEMASS.
Chair Thomas Tucker didn’t deny that but said the town’s trash tonnage has decreased due to increased recycling, which is collected free of charge by ABC Disposal. The company then sorts and sells the recycling.
Before the vote, Planning Board member John Mathieu did explain that this was not the last step for the development.
“By making this amendment we are only allowing the applicants to petition the Board of Health for trash pickup,” he said.
The Planning Board unanimously approved the Bay Club’s petition. Next, the Bay Club will seek approval from the Board of Health, which must agree to add the developments before they can receive trash pickup from the town.
