Planning Board waits on recycling center decision

Jun 12, 2013

The Rochester Planning Board earned a deadline extension from the firm planning a 58,000-square-foot addition to the C&D Waste facility on Cranberry Highway.

Board members said more details must be examined in the site plan review submitted by the recycling facility’s operator Shawmut Associates LLC.

The company plans to expand the  30,000-square-foot facility to one that would measure 88,000 square feet. The new building would be equipped to process municipal solid waste and debris from construction sites.

Shawmut Associates representatives gave the board until June 28 to make a decision. Planning Board Chair Arnold Johnson said a meeting is planned for June 25 when a vote on the site review is scheduled.

Johnson said questions on storm drainage system at the site had to be answered, in addition to minor issues regarding traffic safety.

Otherwise, site conditions requested by  board members and the Conservation Commission had been addressed, Johnson said. Public comment on the site plan review ended at the board’s June 11 meeting. Board members closed the site plan’s public hearing that night.

Rochester town counsel will review the site plan once the proposed changes have been made.

Shawmut representatives said plans include constructing a larger facility around the existing one. Once finished, the smaller building will be demolished. Roof-mounted solar panels will provide energy for the building.
