Players battle it out for top basketball standings
Members of the Tri-Town Basketball League fought it out on March 8 to take home the championship trophy in each division. Inside Old Rochester Regional High School's gymnasium, parents cheered and younger siblings played along the sidelines as the players blazed up and down the court.
Girls Grades 3-6 Final
Fever, coached by Joel and Kelly Watters went up against the Sparks, coached by Dave Silva and Tara Nelson. The Sparks held the lead into the final quarter; Joie Ciffolillo scored eight points, Alivia Miranda scored seven points , Elise Modracek scored four points, and Addison Roy scored two points.
In the last minute of the game, however, but in the last minute of the game, however, Fever's Ava Strand was successful with two foul shots—Strand's baskets led Fever to victory, 22-21.
Fever’s Liza Feeney and Leah Bertrand each scored nine points and Meredith Cameron scored two points.
Boys Grades 3 & 4 Final
The Sixers, coached by Peter Brezinski and Gary Mills, faced off against the Trailblazers, coached by Kirk Bosma.
The Sixers held the Trailblazers off, prevailing with a final score of 28-22.
Boys Grades 5 & 6 Final
The Lakers, coached by Tim Plante, faced the Spurs, coached by Jim Higgins and Carter Hunt. The Lakers were led by Chase Besancon, who scored six points, and Asher O’Brien-Nichols who scored five points.
The team couldn’t hold the Spurs, though, who dominated the boards. Several players contributed to the Spurs' success: John Higgins, John Horan and Vincent Suh each scored four points, while Dillon Hunt score three points and Jackson Gierhart, Colin Stuessi and Nick Fringuelli each scored two points. The final score was 20-11, in favor of the Spurs.
The Tri-Town Basketball League is jointly run by Mattapoisett and Marion Recreation and is open to all students in grades 3-6 in the tri-town.
Teams are coached by volunteers from all three towns and practices and games are held in gyms throughout all three towns.
