Plumb Library's fiction book club, Cafe Parlez, will discuss "Pearl of China" by Anchee Min on Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m.

In a small southern China town in the last days of the 19th century, two young girls bump heads and become good friends. Willow is the only child of a destitute family; Pearl the headstrong daughter of zealous Christian missionaries.

She will grow up to become the Nobel Prize-winning author and activist Pearl Buck, but for now she is a girl embarrassed by her blonde hair and enchanted by her Chinese friend, until the bloody civil wars break out.
