Police say Marion woman attacked officer before being subdued by Taser

A Marion woman is accused of kicking a police officer in the face and stating “Get off my property you bitch,” before being arrested during a confrontation that required the use of a Taser.

According to court documents, a loud party escalated into a violent confrontation early Halloween morning when police allege that hostess Meredith Shachoy, 46, of 18 South St. resisted arrest, physically and verbally abusing officer Karen Ballinger in the process.

Following the incident, Ballinger required medical care for bruises to her face and a fractured finger.

Shachoy was arrested and released on bail Oct. 31. She has been charged with four counts of assault and battery on a police officer, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (shod foot), disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace.

Shachoy has a pre-trial hearing scheduled for March 1 in Wareham District Court.

Just before midnight on Oct. 30, Ballinger and Sgt. Jeffrey Tripp responded to a noise complaint at South Street.

According to police reports, a birthday party was being held for Shachoy’s husband, Christopher, who immediately responded to the officer’s request to lower the volume of music.

The report states that Meredith allegedly became irate and demanded to know who complained to police. When the officers refused to identify the person, Meredith responded by, “pointing her finger and saying, 'I pay taxes, I pay your salary, get off my property,'" according to the report.

The situation escalated further as partygoers became aware of the shouting.

Additional officers were called for backup, including Sgt. Richard Nighelli, who stated in his report that some of those in attendance “began making comments about the police, yelling ‘the Gestapos are here’…I immediately realized this could escalate into a dangerous situation.”

Court documents state that, when officers attempted to calm down Meredith, she pulled away and said, “Get the [expletive] off my property.”

Officers then informed her she would be placed under arrest.

She then walked towards the back of the house and attempted to enter through a door. According to Ballinger, she told her to not the enter house at which point Meredith turned around and threw a punch. The blow knocked Ballinger to the ground, and "she then kicked this officer with a shod foot (black boots) directly in the mouth," according to the report.

Meredith then allegedly kicked two other officers in the head and struck another officer in the head with her fist as they attempted to place her in custody.

Tripp then told Meredith he would deploy his Taser. Documents state that Tripp had to stun her twice before she could be handcuffed.

She was brought to the Marion Police Station for booking and was released on $40 bail to the custody of her husband.

According to Tripp's report, Christopher was notified at the station during his wife's booking of the alleged altercation between Meredith and Ballinger.

“He was not aware of this as he and others had still been to the rear of the guest house by the pool,” the report states. “Mr. Shachoy advised that his wife has always had a problem with ‘authority.’”

From material posted on the business networking website LinkedIn, the Shachoys appear to work for the Cambridge-based real estate company CMS Partners LLC. Christopher is listed as the principal/owner of the company, having founded it in 1986.

Court documents list the company as Meredith’s employer. Online records also indicate the couple has another residence in Cambridge. Married in 1994, the couple’s wedding announcement was published in the New York Times.

Police Chief Lincoln Miller did not immediately respond to a request from Sippican Week for comment. The Shachoys were unavailable for comment.
