A poll for the polls: Selectmen seek feedback for town election hours

Jun 11, 2014

The Mattapoisett Selectmen are polling residents to find out what polling times they prefer for the annual town election.

Town Administrator Mike Gagne said several residents told him they had trouble making the 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. polling hours.

“I mentioned to [Town Clerk Catherine Heuberger] that it might be good to make it consistent with the state election,” said Gagne.

State election polling hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. If the hours were moved earlier, Heuberger calculated the additional cost at approximately $400, including extra staffing hours and police detail.

As Old Hammondtown School is the designated polling station, Selectman Tyler Macallister was concerned that the earlier time might conflict with the bus schedule and drop-offs in the morning. He said those who could not vote on the day of the election have the option of an absentee ballot.

“I’m not sure it’s going to bring in a lot more voters,” said Macallister.

Selectmen also considered opening the polls an hour earlier at 9 a.m. to avoid the morning rush.

Before making a decision, Selectmen requested a poll be put on the town’s website for residents to weigh-in. They will discuss the issue again in September.
