Principal to encourage more students to take PSAT
In an effort to encourage all students to take the PSAT, Old Rochester Regional High School will move the optional test from Saturday to Wednesday.
The Preliminary SAT is a standardized test that helps sophomores and juniors prepare for the SAT college entrance exam. It is also connected to various scholarships and shows the “AP potential” for college level courses taught at the school.
“We feel it is a critical piece to the school and to students’ preparation for college,” said Principal Mike Devoll.
By changing the test to a school day, students would be more inclined to take the exam, and Devoll said the goal is for 100 percent participation.
The test is $14 each. Any student on free or reduced lunch would take the test for free.
“I think nowadays the test is of greater importance,” said Devoll.
Even for students who are not planning on college, the PSAT keeps their options open, he said.
In addition to saving $1,300 for using the for Saturday test, Assistant Superintendent Elise Frangos said the PSAT has been shown to encourage students to take higher level courses they may not have considered.
“I’m very enthusiastic about this possibility,” Frangos said.
