Private search party organized for missing man

After a call for volunteers to search for 21-year-old Dana Dourdeville went “viral,” organizers ask that anyone not close to the missing man search areas other than West Island on Sunday afternoon.

“We would like to keep the search party to family and friends,” wrote Old Rochester Regional Athletic Director Bill Tilden on his Facebook page. “Dana could be anywhere from Westport to Woods Hole or maybe further, and all that shoreline still needs to be checked.”

On Saturday, Tilden asked for help to search for signs of Dana or his belongings including his hat, life vest, rifle or other items. The search is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. It will start at the West Island parking lot in Fairhaven.

After a number of volunteers stepped forward Tilden wrote, “My plea went viral about Dana and has gotten bigger than we can handle.”

Tilden said volunteers should search elsewhere to increase the chances of finding Dana or his belongings.

“Help us by covering even more ground than West Island and please keep Dana in your thoughts,” he wrote.

In Tilden’s original post he encouraged searchers to wear warm, brightly-colored clothes and bring extra, dry clothes in case they get wet. The search is not being conducted with police or Coast Guard officials.

The search is scheduled to end around 5 p.m., about half an hour after sunset.

Dourdeville went duck hunting on Tuesday, Dec. 31. When he failed to return after sunset his mother searched for him. She found his car parked on West Island in Fairhaven but no other sign of her son. She called police who then launched a search.

His kayak was discovered floating off shore three miles to the east of West Island. Police continued the searched Wednesday and Thursday. On Thursday, the snowstorm forced authorities to end the search at 1 p.m. for the day.
