Prom problems: Committee mulls 21-year-old attending dance
The Old Rochester Regional School Committee tabled a request from senior Sara Achorn that would allow her 21-year-old boyfriend to attend prom this spring.
The committee will discuss it again in March, but there was some disagreement among the group at the Wednesday night meeting.
The student handbook states that no one aged 21 or older can attend the prom, but Achorn, with signed support from teachers and her parents, said her boyfriend is an ORR alumni, could get a background check and would not bring any contraband to the event.
Achorn also argued that she went to school at ORR with some people who have now graduated and are 21.
While School Committee member James Muse said 21 might be an arbitrary number, others were against making an exception.
“My concern is, where do you draw the line?” said Cary Humphrey. “We deal with this every year.”
Last year, the School Committee denied a similar request, though that student was engaged to the 21-year-old in question.
Principal Mike Devoll was not in favor of the exception.
“My feeling is they had their prom. We can’t be everything to everyone,” he said.
Cheryl Hebert, who said she married her high school sweetheart, was sympathetic to Achorn’s request, but said “the problem that you’re up against here is that it says no exceptions.”
Ultimately, the committee members decided to continue the conversation at the March 1 meeting where they also plan to make a decision.
