Prop 2 1/2 override may be in the works for tri-town
While regionalization of tri-town schools may not be in the cards anytime soon, Mattapoisett School Committee Chair James Higgins said a request for a Proposition 2 ½ Override may be.
An override, which must be approved by voters, allows a town to exceed its annual 2 ½ percent tax increase.
If proposed, the override would increase the budget for Old Rochester Regional Junior High and High School.
Higgins said when affluent towns such as Mattapoisett, Marion and Rochester are cutting school budgets and consequently classes and teachers, then something needs to happen.
According to Higgins, the override was discussed at a meeting with the rest of the tri-town school committee chairs.
“It’s something that I’m going to be talking about,” he said. “Hopefully, we can all support it and help get it on the ballot and help get it passed.”
The topic will be discussed more at upcoming meetings, said Higgins.
