Proposal presented to Marion School Committee to resurrect PE position

Jun 3, 2016

A member of the School Council for Sippican School wants to raise funds to pay for a part-time physical education teacher that was cut from next year's budget.

The Marion School Committee heard the proposal on June 1.

Committee members said all the money would need to be raised before the position could be filled, which could make it tricky to accomplish before the start of the fall semester.

Under the proposal, the money would be raised specifically for the town to pay for the position, but committee members said that if this were the case and enough money couldn’t be raised, the money would have to be returned to donors.

“I appreciate the time and effort you have put into this proposal, and I think it’s great,” Chair Christine Marcolini said. “I’m just trying to figure out the logistics to make it work.”

The committee suggested that the money be raised apart from the town, and once the full amount is in, it could be given to the town to pay for the position.

Or, if not enough money can be raised to pay for a position, the fundraisers can come back to the School Committee with what they have raised to see how the funds could be used to meet the physical education needs at the school.

The school will still have a full-time PE teacher next year, but the reduction in staff means less gym time for students.
