Proposed ORR district education strategic plan discussed at school committee meeting

ROCHESTER — The Old Rochester Regional School District has a new five-year strategic plan with three main components, all aimed at developing the next generation of innovators.

Old Rochester Superintendent Dr. Douglas White told the Rochester School Committee on Aug. 29 that the plan focuses on providinge tri-town students with 21st century academic skills, strengthening social and emotional competencies, and preparing students to be engaged global citizens.

The school district's "Vision 2023”strategic plan has been completed but will require an approval by the Joint School Committees when it meets on Sept. 27 to be official.

White told the Rochester committee that the goals are the result of months of collaborative work among teachers, administrators and community members. To bring it into focus for the school committees and others, the district had videos made to illustrate the plan's three components.

White then dimmed the lights and showed a video produced for the district called "If I start here, where will I be in five years?" using the imaginary "McBean's Star Time Machine" and local younger and older siblings, showing  their "transformation" over the years after having gone through the time machine.

Another video entitled "Will you be there for us?" was a poignant representation of children asking their prospective teachers some thoughtful and moving questions.

White said both videos were shown to all the teachers and staff on opening day as a way of keeping everyone on the same page regarding the school district's strategic education plan for the next five years.
