MATTAPOISETT — One person’s trash is one artist’s treasure. Pieces of art made with recycled materials were on display at the Mattapoisett library on Saturday, Aug. 31 for the Re-Art show reception.

The show was a work of collaboration between the Mattapoisett Library and the Mattapoisett Sustainability Partnership.

Barbara Van Inwegen, member of the Mattapoisett Sustainability Partnership, said the organization has been promoting different ways to reuse items.

“It’s great,” said Van Inwegen. “People are so creative.”

Van Inwegen also entered two pieces into the show: a pot holder made from a pair of jeans and a small quilt.

Other pieces of art entered in the show included bags, hats and a seahorse made out of corks from wine bottles.

Amanda Lawrence, a librarian at Mattapoisett Library, entered a hedgehog made from an upcycled book and buttons.

Lawrence said she initially taught a program at the library on how to make the hedgehogs before entering one into the show.

“It’s wonderful to see people using their creativity to reimagine things,” said Lawrence.

Another artist, Freya Lombard, used inspiration from the theme of recycling to create a piece.

Lombard made a large sea turtle out of recycled cardboard, paper, Mod Podge and paint.

She said she wanted to base her project on something that benefits from people recycling.
