A response from the Kittansett Club

Mar 13, 2012

To the editor,

I am writing in response to your article of March 7, regarding claims of sexual discrimination and civil rights violations made by Chad M. Peters against The Kittansett Club.

While we stand by our response to your reporter, Jennifer Heshion, and would not normally discuss issues regarding our vendors, I feel it necessary to unequivocally deny that David Barrett, The Board of Governors or Management of Kittansett has engaged in any discriminatory act or that any action has been taken by the Club against Chad Michal Peters on account of his sexual orientation.

Further, I would like to clarify the circumstances that lead to my decision as General Manager to not use Mr. Peters services for a club hosted charity event; a by‐invitation event that The Kittansett Club has hosted for 30 years.

Mr. Peters failed to supply staff to set up this “over the top” event which is customary when an outside vendor is brought in. Club staff set up all the linens, tables, chairs and dishware which was Mr. Peters responsibility.

Mr. Peters failed to follow through on the clean up after the event, negatively affecting a funeral service being held the next day. He left dirty linens, a large wooden cake and lighting on the deck and in the area of the memorial service.

He also posted and broadcast images and commentary of the party on his website without the expressed permission of the hosting member, club and guests, using the photos to publicize his services.

He was asked to remove them as a matter of privacy, as our members have a right to their privacy while on club grounds. He did so reluctantly, posting negative comments on his website, and later re‐posted the photographs back on his websites.

Mr. Peters also called me directly on the phone in a hostile and abusive threatening language, saying he would sue, calling the members bigots and other choice names.

At bottom, it was Mr. Peters’ inability to follow through on staffing, clean‐up and break‐ down at a club member event, as well as his later rude and unprofessional comments, that lead to my decision.

His actions over the past week and a half are evidence of his poor judgment and unethical behavior. It is shameful that Mr. Peters would use allegations of discrimination as a shield for his unprofessional conduct.
