RMS students offer to flock your friends

Apr 28, 2017

April Fool’s Day may have passed, but there’s never a bad time for a good-natured prank. Especially when it’s for a good cause.

Rochester Memorial School students who are headed to the Destination Imagination Global Championships need to raise money for the trip down to Knoxville, Tennessee. One of the ways they’re doing that is by “flocking.”

The students, present at the Rochester School Committee meeting on Thursday evening, said that for just $20, they would flock a family member, a friend or a neighbor. By that, of course, they mean they will set up 20 plastic flamingos on somebody’s lawn.

If you have a mischievous friend or a prank-loving brother, however, you can also choose to pay $15 to give your lawn flock-immunity. However, if you skip out on the preventative measure and end up getting “flocked,” you can always pay $5 to find out who flocked you – and then maybe get them back.

Perhaps more traditionally, the students are also raising money through a GoFundMe page and a fundraiser at the 99 restaurant on May 2.

The students, fifth graders, earned their spot at the Global Championship by winning the regional competition and then placing at states.

Their winning skit is called “Vanished” and is a fine arts challenge. The goal was for the students to research the meaning of colors and what emotions and feelings they were often associated with, and then present a story based on that research about what would happen if one of the colors vanished.

The RMS group chose to focus on the color red. While often associated with love and anger, the students mainly chose to explore the anger portion. In their story, the color red accidentally disappeared after a scientist trying to create a new color made a mistake. Before the color red vanished, the students showed a lot of people arguing. However, once it disappeared, everything became more peaceful.
