Rochester access to Marion transfer station made official

Dec 7, 2020

ROCHESTER — Come the new year, Rochester residents will have a new place to haul their waste to in Marion.

Selectmen signed off on a contract with Marion to use the Benson Brook Transfer Station.

Starting Jan. 1, Marion will own and operate the transfer station that is currently run by the Carver Marion Wareham Regional Refuse District.

Select Board Chair Paul Ciaburri said residents will pay anywhere from $60 to $70 for an access sticker, and there will be a discount for seniors (over 70) and veterans.

Ciaburri this price will be a little higher than what Marion residents will pay.

The town currently has access to the refuse district’s transfer station on Route 28 in Rochester because the station is in the town.
In the new year, the Town of Wareham will operate the Route 28 Transfer Station when the waste district agreement ends between all three towns and each is left to find a solution to waste management.

In early November, the refuse district finalized a lease agreement that will allow Wareham to operate the transfer station and allow Carver residents to purchase stickers that would allow them access.

Ciaburri said Rochester is in talks with Wareham for an agreed upon rate to use the Route 28 Transfer Station versus the Benson Brook Transfer Station.

Stickers can be purchased for the Benson Brook Transfer Station at Rochester Town Hall starting in the new year.

In other news, Selectmen voted to hold the 2021 Annual Town Meeting on May 24.
