Rochester Country Fair moving ahead on schedule

Mar 20, 2012

The Rochester Country Fair’s move to Pine Street is making good time, says Dave Souza, co-Chair of the Fair Committee.

Souza updated the Board of Selectmen on the move during its March 19 meeting.

Souza said the Fair Committee is planning to install a septic system on the new fairgrounds to meet with drainage standards for vendors on the site and students from Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School will be lending a hand.

Metal shop students will be constructing bleachers for the fair, while others have volunteered to do the electric work.

“There are a lot of people stepping forward to help," Souza said. "Our main concern is to keep everyone in the town as happy as we can.”

The committee has held several fundraisers to offset costs for the move, including a pajama party hosted at the Ponderosa in November and a St. Patrick’s Day dinner.

Souza said that the committee is planning to build one structure on the site, which members hope to design as a barn.

Town Administrator Richard LaCamera has met with the committee to review insurance policies needed for bringing vendors on to the property.

“Everything is on track,” LaCamera said.

The committee has already secured approval from the School Committee and Rochester Memorial School Principal Jay Ryan to use the school’s parking lot during the fair.

The fair is scheduled to open August 16 and run through August 19.

Selectmen Chair Brad Morse said that he was pleased with the committee’s plans so far.

“You seem like you’re right on schedule,” Morse said. “Everything looks great.”
