Rochester enters energy-saving contract

Jul 15, 2019

ROCHESTER — After research by the Town Administrator, Town Counsel, a Town Meeting approval and additional work to finalize the language, Rochester Selectmen approved a contract with a company called Good Energy that would allow Rochester residents to negotiate electricity rates jointly for savings.

Good Energy specializes in a process called aggregation, which allows town residents and businesses input in selecting an electricity supplier. The contract that Selectmen approved on July 15 also locks in prices for three years, as opposed to non-aggregated prices, which change every six months.

Negotiating jointly allows the town to save up to 3.27 cents per kilowatt hour. Eversource will still continue to distribute electricity to residents. Only the source will change.

Rochester residents will also have the opportunity to opt out through a card in the mail or by calling Good Energy if they do not wish to aggregate with other residents.

Every other town in the Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development District  is also aggregating  power.
