Rochester gets a raptor for a spring visitor

ROCHESTER — Avian photographer Darrell Hancock lives in New Bedford, but has family in Rochester and often visits there. On Sunday, April 5, he spotted a young Red-tailed Hawk in a bog across from Mary’s Pond.

The hawk stayed on the ground for long enough for Hancock to get an abundance of photos, before flying up to perch in a nearby tree.

The hawk was at the stage where it had a streaked “belly band,” but has not yet developed the red tail that is the signature of the species, said birdwatcher Carol Molander after seeing the photos.
