Rochester Historical Society to discuss Captain Charles Bryant Oct. 17
Oct 8, 2012
The Rochester Historical Society will meet on Wednesday, October 17, at 7 p.m.
There will be a lecture by Seth Mendell about Captain Charles Bryant, a Rochester native.
Bryant grew up in Rochester, went to the Pacific and Alaska whaling, and in 1867 when the US purchased Alaska, he was chosen Territorial Governor of Alaska because of his knowledge of the Eskimo customs and language.
In later years he returned to this area and operated the Bay View Hotel on the Mattapoisett waterfront.
The meeting will take place at the East Rochester Church/Museum, 355 County Road. All are welcome. Refreshments will be served.
