Rochester ladies host spirited Halloween party
The Rochester Women's Club always puts on a fun Halloween Party and Wednesday night was no different.
The group members met at its headquarters on Route 105 for a costume party complete with cocktails.
Following a brief business meeting, bartender and club member Yvonne Benton served up two-sip cups of mudslides, martinis and cosmopolitans.
The mixologist at Charlie's Place in Wareham, Benton has crafted cocktails for more than three decades.
Originally from Martha's Vineyard, Benton moved to the mainland in 1974 and got a job at King of the Road, a former eatery in Mattapoisett.
Working at night was optimal for a young mom who wanted to stay with her daughter during the day. When her husband came home from his job, she went to work.
"Back then I was very shy," she said. But becoming a bartender changed that.
Now considering retirement, Benton said she hesitates because "that's my social life. I'm not a stay at home kind of person."
As she served up drinks, Nancy Tuttle Boutin recalled previous Halloween parties at the Women's Club.
For one party, the women dressed head to toe as witches and gathered around a bonfire at Boutin's home.
"We really went out making ourselves into witches," she said.
The most memorable party, however, was one that brought out the police and fire departments.
"We went all out, brought in a smoke machine and purple lights," Boutin said.
The spooky atmosphere started to get a little too thick, so the women opened the front door.
"It was just running out into the street," Boutin said of the smoke.
Unbeknownst to the women, the heavy fog in the small building had set off the fire alarm, and in no time, a fire truck and police cars were on the scene.
"They made great fun out of that," said Boutin.
This year's party didn't bring out the authorities, but many more events are coming up, so who knows.
At the beginning of November, the Women's Club will begin taking orders for its annual Thanksgiving pie sale followed by its holiday wreath sale and Christmas party in December. More information will be available on the group's Facebook page, Rochester Women's Club.
