Rochester Lions Club delivers holiday meals

One hundred fifty families in Rochester and Wareham will sit down to a Christmas dinner they might not otherwise have had courtesy of the Rochester Lions Club.

As part of the club’s annual food drive, members packed and delivered baskets filled with potatoes, onions, a butternut squash, canned vegetables, dessert and more to families in need.

In addition to all the fixings, members also provided frozen turkeys.

Lions Club President Liz Ashley said the group contacts Rochester Memorial School and Old Colony officials each year to find out how many baskets to prepare.

“They know who the needy families are and give us a count by a certain date,” Ashley said, adding that some local seniors also receive baskets.

Neighboring families in Wareham also benefited.

“Because Wareham doesn’t have a Lions Club presently we do a little bit of outreach work when we can,” Ashley said.

Between 60 to 70 baskets were given to Wareham residents, she said.

The Christmas food drive followed a similar one club members hold for Thanksgiving each year. Last month, 150 baskets were also donated.

For both drives, Ashley offered thanks to the Boy Scout Troop 31 for helping members load baskets.

“When we have more hands it’s less work on the members of the group,” she said.

Also, she offered thanks to volunteers and staff at the Senior Center for allowing the Lions to use the facility during the drive.
