Rochester man seeks 1,200 buffer for two-family homes
Rochester resident Tobias Paulo would like to see an addition to the town’s zoning bylaws, making it impossible for a single family home to be converted to a two-family home without a 1,200 foot buffer from other houses.
Paulo brought his petition before Selectmen on Monday night as they must first send the proposal to the Planning Board for a public hearing. Without that, voters could approve the bylaw at Town Meeting in June, but it would not pass the attorney general’s office.
A resident of Bradford Estates, Paulo said someone in his neighborhood attempted to get approval to convert a home to a two-family residence. Although the homeowner was denied for other reasons, Paulo looked around and discovered that there were other houses in the subdivision that could also qualify.
He said the bylaw as is leaves the town vulnerable to such conversions and that it could “create mayhem” if many people decided to alter their houses.
Paulo also requested that the item not be placed at the bottom of the Town Meeting agenda. Selectmen said they would take that under consideration.
The petition will now be presented at an upcoming Planning Board meeting.
