Rochester Memorial gets musical for the holidays

Dec 19, 2014

Popular holiday tunes, jazz improvisation and a sing-a-long were highlights of the Rochester Memorial School's holiday concert on Friday morning.

Lead by band director Chris Williamson, the fifth and sixth grade band started out the concert with the "Star Spangled Banner" and went on to playful songs like "Ding Dong Merrily on High." Up next, the chorus sang fun holiday songs and classics, including "Christmas Time is Here" from "A Charlie Brown Christmas," with music director Sue Ellis conducting.

After the jazz band showed off its improv skills, the school broke into a sing-a-long of Christmas favorites such as "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and "A Marshmallow World."

Throughout the concert, students introduced each song, sharing some of its history. For the sing-a-long, groups of three to four students also stood in front of the audience to lead the music. Speaking in front of fellow students was a great "leadership opportunity" for the kids, said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Elise Frangos.

At the end of the concert, Ellis thanked those who helped make the concert a success.

"It takes a team to put together a concert like this."
