Rochester mother writes book of hope after son's death
It wasn’t long after Maggie McGee’s son Brendan was killed in a car accident that she and other members of her family began to experience unusual, even supernatural occurrences.
“Some of the stuff is kind of weird, but it is what it is,” said McGee, a Rochester resident and devout Catholic.
For example, after the fatal accident McGee’s grandson described seeing his uncle being taken to heaven by an angel.
A photograph of Brendan’s tombstone showed a wide beam of light emanating from it, and McGee said she was once awakened at 3 a.m. by her son hugging her.
McGee, who was a nurse for 43 years, kept a journal of these “weird” events for almost seven years before penning her book, “He’s Right Here,” self-published in 2011.
McGee said she never expected to write a book.
“I didn’t even know how to open a Word document,” she said.
With encouragement and help from friends and family, McGee began writing.
“It’s all verbatim testimonies from me and my family,” said McGee. “With prayers that helped me to get through it.”
“It was time to talk about it,” she added.
Now, McGee is hoping her book will be a source of comfort to other people just as she believes God used each supernatural event to give her hope.
“It’s very encouraging for people to know that a loved one is not gone,” said McGee, who has appeared on local television, at libraries and on the radio to share her stories.
McGee, her husband and family have also set up a trust fund to provide Rochester Memorial School students with musical instruments and equipment in honor of her son, who had once played drums at the elementary school.
“This is God’s way, perhaps, of helping me hope and carry on,” said McGee.
