Rochester recognized by Arbor Day Foundation

Rochester was named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation it was announced at Monday’s Board of Selectmen meeting. The town received a plaque as well as a road sign to put up.

The criteria that has to be met to become a Tree City is that the town must have a board or department dedicated to the care of trees, a tree care ordinance, a forestry program with a budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance.

Also at the meeting, Laurell Farinon from the Conservation Committee announced that the committee has put out a second edition of their trail guide. The guide has been expanded and includes new information as well as a new layout and binding to make it more user friendly. Copies are available at the Town Hall Annex.

This meeting was the first meeting for new Town Administrator Suzanne Szyndlar, who started on July 1. She said she survived a busy first week and is transitioning well.

“I’ve had sixteen years with the town so that’s a good help,” she said. “I know the people, I know the departments…I do want to thank the townspeople and the department heads and all of [the Selectmen] for helping with the transition.”
