Rochester reviews New Bedford, Taunton water withdrawal
It could take years, but Rochester Town Administrator Mike McCue said he is keeping an eye on progress of New Bedford and Taunton’s water withdrawal permit renewal.
The towns draw water from a reservoir in Rochester, and McCue said there are concerns about how much the towns are taking.
“The amount they wish to withdraw well exceeds those particular cities’ needs,” McCue said. “There’s concern that it could be a revenue generating enterprise, at least for the city of New Bedford.”
McCue and Water Commissioner Fred Underhill spoke with representatives from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. Although no decisions were made during the conversation, McCue said he’s confident the DEP will keep Rochester in the loop as the permit process progresses.
