Rochester school budget draft shows 2.4 percent increase
School officials are recommending a 2.4 percent increase for Rochester Memorial School spending in fiscal year 2017, which equates to a $5.9 million total budget.
Business Administrator Patrick Spencer said town leaders were consulted before the budget was developed.
“We’re meeting our needs, and we’re able to do it in a way that I think the town can support going forward,” Spencer told the School Committee on March 3.
The proposed regular day budget is $4,181,000, which marks a $143,000 increase compared to the current budget. The total special education budget is $1,756,000 for fiscal year 2017, a slight decrease from the current budget.
In a cost saving measure, Spencer said funds for a new health teacher were not included in the budget.
“We won’t be able to add that as a position next year,” he said.
Also, Spencer said that a different strategy on purchasing new technology resulted in a $20,000 savings.
“We were able to come down on the final number there,” he said.
Superintendent Doug White said administrators will monitor kindergarten enrollment that includes 42 students. Currently, there is enough staff to maintain existing class sizes.
Chair Tina Rood said if the number of students increases in any grade the budget will have to be revisited.
“That’s always in the back of our minds as we have new developments here in Rochester,” Rood said.
A public hearing on the Rochester Memorial School budget will be held Thursday, April 7 at 6:30 p.m. in Town Hall.
