Rochester School Committee discusses 2016-17 calendar
The calendar for the 2016-17 school year is still a work in progress, and on Wednesday night, the Rochester School Committee offered up some suggestions.
Superintendent Doug White said he is consulting all of the tri-town school committees to compile their feedback before the calendar is finalized.
No one questioned the school start date on Aug. 30, but several asked for another look at the Christmas vacation.
“It’s the shortest Christmas break we could possibly have,” said White.
Since Christmas is on a Sunday, students would only have six days off, from Dec. 26 to Jan. 2. A few committee members asked if students could have the Friday before Christmas off as well.
“Even last Christmas wasn’t a big break,” said Jennifer Kulak. “[Parents] would have appreciated more of a break.”
But a seven-week stretch without any vacation days in the spring was more problematic to Kulak.
“That’s a long time for kids to go without a break,” she said. “I’d like to see a break there. I’m not looking forward to that next year in my own family.”
Robin Rounseville thought differently. She said the steady schedule could be a plus.
“Kids can get into a rhythm,” she said.
The school committee also discussed the professional development days. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Elise Frangos said having one full day of development earlier in the year followed by several half days was helpful for teachers to apply what they are learning.
White said he will compile the suggestions from the school committees. The Joint School Committee is likely to vote on the calendar at its next meeting.
