Rochester Selectman candidate: Michael Murphy
Michael Murphy and Bradford Morse are running for one seat on the Rochester Board of Selectmen in the town's annual election, April 13. Read about Morse here.
Michael Murphy, 64, a current member of the Planning Board, is a former Selectman who served one term 20 years ago. Now, he's asking voters to bring him back to the seat for another term.
“I enjoyed being a Selectman. I enjoy helping people,” said Murphy, who owns Murphy’s Auto Salvage.
“Being a selectmen is no different than running your household. Whatever comes up, you handle it in a professional manner, give it 110 percent, you do what you can in the best interest of the town and people,” he said.
During his previous term as Selectman, Murphy said he was charged with helping lay the foundation for the Council on Aging’s Senior Center as well as the adjacent ball fields.
“We had a great group of people who again gave 110 percent,” he said.
There is one thing he didn’t get to accomplish during his term.
“The only thing I wanted to do was also a youth center for the tri-town. That never came into play,” said Murphy, a father of four adult children.
As a member of the Planning Board, Murphy said he’s worked together with the Zoning Board “to do the best possible job for the people and the town.” Even if elected to the Board of Selectmen, Murphy said he plans to stay on the Planning Board, where he has been involved with many discussions on solar farms and other aspects of development in town.
Murphy said he didn’t have any specific goals, if he is elected, but he would seek to “represent the town and do the best possible job.”
“If I get elected then whatever is in front of the board at that time, I’ll have to bring myself up to speed and do the best possible job for the town the people and as part of the Board of Selectmen,” he said.
