Rochester Selectmen approve police contract
Selectmen on Monday night approved a new contract with the police union that gives officers cost of living increases, but removed a clause that earned them money for accrued sick leave.
The agreement covers the next three years.
The first year, officers receive a one percent cost of living increase and two percent increases in the following years.
Under the contract, officers hired after July 1, 2013 will not be able to receive compensation for unused sick days.
According to Town Counsel Blair Bailey, officers may still accumulate an unlimited number of sick days. Previously, the town paid officers leaving the department for their accrued sick leave hours.
“Towns have been trying to get rid of [the benefit] because it’s a liability,” Bailey said.
