Rochester Senior Bowling League still rolling

Who says you have to be young to have fun?

The Mattapoisett league might be having a rough patch but the Rochester Senior Bowling League is still going strong after plenty of years at Bowlmor Lanes in Mattapoisett. The group of about ten meets on Wednesdays at 9 a.m. and bowls three strings, or games.

Rochester resident Sonny Hartley said the league has been around a long time.

“I like it,” he said. “It’s a little exercise and a lot of friendship for us old-timers.” Hartley added there are a variety of people in league, from retired nurses to carpenters to car salesman.

“And of course,” he added, “we don’t care who wins.”

Kenn Cutler, also from Rochester, enjoys the challenge bowling can offer. He’s been in the league for more than four years and recently switched to bowling with his left arm.

“The hardest part is figuring out how to get the steps right,” he said. “It isn’t a natural transition.”

Cutler said the best part of the league is the people.

“We’re all friends here, whether we know each other or not.”

The cost for three games is $9.50. All Rochester seniors are welcome. Coffee is provided and bowlers can bring in breakfast snacks or desserts.
