Rochester's Frosty Road Race participants outrun blizzard

Jan 23, 2016

Despite a massive storm barreling up the East Coast, participants in Old Colony’s Frosty Runner Road Race still managed to squeeze in a 10.5-mile and 5K run on Saturday morning.

The race returned after a one-year hiatus due to “complications,” according to organizer and cross country coach Beth Botelho.

“We’re back and we plan to be here next year,” Botelho said. “The support we’ve received from the running community has been tremendous. Come join us next year!”

The race benefits Old Colony Regional Vocational High School athletics and the school's National Honor Society. It offered two courses for runners to choose from, both wind through Rochester back roads.

Saturday was the fourth the race’s fourth time being held. Previous years have resulted in (sometimes multiple) postponements due to poor weather.

Before the 10 a.m. start, runners warmed up on school grounds under cloudy skies as high winds ensured conditions lived up to the race’s title.

In total, 108 people from across the South Coast and Cape Cod participated. As the last runners on the 10.5 mile course crossed the finish line the first flakes of the storm began to fall.

Principal Karen Guenette said she was glad so many arrived to participate.

“More people than we expected showed up today,” she said. “This is a wonderful turnout considering the forecast.”
