Rochester's town-wide cleanup begins

Apr 14, 2013

Have you seen some litter lately? Rochester’s got it in the bag, or at least that’s the plan for this week.

The Rochester Women’s Club and Rochester Land Trust began their annual town-wide cleanup on Saturday.

This year, the group is hoping to get more volunteers to pick up garbage along the roads of Rochester.

“There are a lot of regulars,” said Wendy Keeler, a member of the town’s Greenways committee. “It’s not really growing as fast we we’d like.”

To get more people involved this year, the cleanup was scheduled the same week as spring vacation, and the groups sent word out to parents. The cleanup was also extended to a full week.

With vodka nips, scratch tickets, water bottles, and fast food wrappers dotting the roadside, Keeler said the streets need some TLC.

“It’s a mess every year,” said Keeler of Vaughn Hill Road. “I get two to three bags from Cervelli’s to the Grange. That’s a lot of trash.”

The Highway Department will collect the garbage bags from the road.

To participate in the cleanup, contact Nancy Boutin at 508-654-6621 or rochsterwc@comcast.net, or Wendy Keeler at 508-763-9888 or wkeeler@comcast.net. Trash bags and gloves will also be available on Saturday, April 20, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Women’s Club.
