Roof snow removal costs Sippican School $34,000

While heavy snow has collapsed scores of roofs across the state, there’s no danger of that happening at Sippican School.

“I’m happy to say we were proactive and started well before anyone else,” said Facilities Director Gene Jones. “And we started clearing the roofs after the first storm. We’re looking good.”

On Wednesday evening, Jones told Marion School Committee members that the roof had been inspected and is well within state code guidelines.

Safety comes with a price, though.

Jones estimated it cost $34,000 to remove the snow so far this year. Part of the cost is due to the fact that qualified crews, who are properly insured, were hired for the work.

“It’s a big expense. We don’t send custodians up there,” Jones said.

To offset that cost, Superintendent Doug White said some money might be moved from the capital plan line item.

“At some point, we may make a request to manage for the rest of the year until we get a better handle on the final cost,” White said.

State and federal funds may also become available. Jones said he would pursue those reimbursements.

Jones credited the Department of Public Works for its efforts this winter. Town crews are responsible for clearing Sippican School sidewalks.

With so much snow piled up, Jones said he is now focused on clearing school drains to avoid flooding when warmer temperatures arrive.

“Hopefully, this is a hundred year winter and we don’t have to go through this again,” committee member Christine Winters said.
