Ruptured pipe floods ORR classroom

Feb 18, 2015

A burst pipe flooded one high school classroom with thousands of gallons of water on Sunday, Feb. 15.

Mattapoisett and Marion firefighters were dispatched at 2:32 p.m. and cleared the scene at 8 p.m. after cleaning up the mess and repairing a damaged sprinkler system.

“There was substantial damage,” said Mattapoisett Fire Chief Andrew Murray. “The ceiling tiles were dropped and the entire room was flooded.”

Murray said a lengthy period of low temperatures was to blame.

“[The pipes] were located in an unheated area above the room,” he said. “Usually, it’s not a problem because the heat is able to rise through the ceiling tiles.”

The damage occurred on the Sunday.
